Democracy Now! now? I have trouble these days figuring out how I belong to the Democracy Now! community, and subsequent trouble choosing to visit it very often. Do I fit under their "African-American history" interest section? Or their "racism" section? But these recent clips are pretty good. They introduce the Booker's Place clip with some good footage from the aftermath of the L.A. Riots. The piece in general includes an interview with Booker Wright's granddaughter, whose family research was a catalyst for the film. In the piece on the late Donald Payne, his brother shares some old stories…

  • I Am Hitting A Stride That I Like...

    15 May 2012 | 5:20 am
I love when I remember to just be still and listen for God.  God is always speaking, I am not always listening.  When I go to prayer with a question or an issue or seeking resolution or more clarity, I remind myself to do it in a bold way, but not desperate.  Desperation makes you blind and deaf.  You can neither see or hear a blessing when you are drowning in your own despair. The answers come at the most opportune time... just when I think I am at the end of my rope viola! a blessing appears, moving me further down life's roads.  The woman I am today is far from that…

Just like the Facebook Newsfeed, keeping your Twitter timeline full of relevant information. I have to be honest. I haven’t been the biggest fan Google+. I’ve been Circled over 11k times , but I don’t see much activity from users beyond sharing the same things they share on Twitter and Facebook. Most of the people I’ve circled seem to be more active elsewhere. Though Google+ original design was well received, I found the layout too cluttered with text. Overall, Google+ reminded me of a message board stuck with an old school design while flaunting new school features. So, I’m more than excited about the new redesign for Google+ because it finally feels…

Facebook is buying Instagram for $1 billion. After the $500 million valuation Instagram received, it makes you wonder why Facebook will pay twice the price for Instagram. It’s just a mobile app that lets you share pics with friends and has less than 50 million total users compared to Facebook’s 800+ million active monthly users. You can do the same thing on your phone or desktop from the Facebook site. This may be true, but when it comes to designing an addictive mobile app and photo-sharing experience, Instagram is a winner, and threat-turned-opportunity for Facebook’s…

Obesity is more common in African Americans than in other ethnic groups. But when it comes to black people and weight, that's where the agreement seems to end. Is food the culprit? Is exercise the solution? Is there even a real problem to begin with, or should we be focusing on health -- or even self-acceptance -- rather than the number on the scale? Against the backdrop of the first lady's mission to slim down the nation's kids, black celebs getting endorsements after shedding inches and a booming weight-loss industry, The Root will publish a series of interviews with medical professionals,…

Last week the New York Civil Liberties Union released a report about New York City's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which prompted Public Advocate Bill Blasio to call for an internal audit of the program that has been criticized for some time for its disparate impact on people of color. The report found that 42 percent of those stopped were black or Latino males between the ages of 14 and 24, a group that makes up 5 percent of the city's population. "Stop and frisk has become synonymous with a massive racial-profiling program in this city," NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said Tuesday.

It has been a painfully uncomfortable weekend. On Friday, I received an injection of the anti-cancer drug Avastin into my left eye. The eye swelled, bled and teared like a leaky water faucet. Just got the eye open Sunday evening, and can now just keep my right eye open. This was done to work antibodies against proteins running rampant in my eye cavity, causing hemorrhages and weed-like excessive nerve growth which has already happened and is currently blocking my field of vision. The doctors also assessed the lasering done in past weeks sessions done to stop open bloodflow to the eye and…

I stop talking to people. I mean, really I stopped calling and having people call me on the telephone. It just got to a point where I just didn't want to have conversations with people anymore. I don't know what got into me and I kind of feel the same way right now, but let me tell you when you're going through something people can only empathize, sometimes talk isn't enough. It's not that I'm looking for sympathy or even an understanding for that matter, what I'm really looking for someone I could just shoot the shit with. When I started going through the deeper portions of the sight loss…

I mean, I'm doing well… Well, well enough to be doing this, I feel like I could be doing more. As a matter of fact I want to do more but I just can't to be honest. It feels like its been a long process even though I had a hemorrhage in my left eye on December 28. It feels like it's been a year for that matter, but I maintain.Yeah, on the last week of last year I had what's considered an 'eye stroke'. I  had a massive hemorrhage - A blood…

I know. It’s been two years. I’ve been busy. I  dusted off my blog this evening because Twitter only allows 140 characters and Facebook is not suited for long, rambling remarks. Especially when it comes to talk about the black church and gay marriage. President Obama declared for the first time on May 9, 2012 in a White House interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts that he supports same-sex marriage, after nearly two years of saying that his views on same-sex marriage were “evolving.” Reactions to the president’s remarks have been swift, predictable, and for…

For many mothers Mother’s Days is tinged with tragedy or sadness. A child’s death or teen suicide, having a child who is a deployed soldier fighting overseas, or one struggling with an illness in the hospital, or one incarcerated can make Mother’s Day a difficult day to get through. Likewise, not every daughter (or son) looks forward to Mother’s Day. If your relationship with your mother is complicated, or you’re estranged from her, or if she’s no longer with you because of death or she no longer even knows your name because she has Alzheimer, waking up to…

On Children by Kahlil Gibran Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the…

Mobile phone size trends have come in and out of style. We started with some cellphones bigger than house phones, then we gradually got smaller and smaller. No one is trying to go back to carrying a five pound phone, but it seems many do prefer larger screens. The Wall Street Journal reports production will begin next month on screens for the new iPhone which will have been reported to be at least four inches. The big comparison lies with Android phones. Android has devices that have well over four inch screens compared to the iPhone’s 3.5 inch screen that has remained the same since…

But whatever, I was going to a free movie and hopefully getting a…

When The CW initially canceled The Game, many of its most devoted fans were upset at what they saw as a premature ousting. The show’s resurrection on BET remains a testament to the power of vocal black audiences. Not only did we get the show up and running again, but its BET debut marked the highest ratings in the network’s history. But I always liked the idea of leaving The Game where it was. The end of season three provided an adequate series finale: the birth of Derwin’s son, his marriage to Melanie in the hospital chapel, Rick Fox comes back for Tasha, Malik’s…

There has been a lot of talk about Africa lately. Yesterday we shared a few of the ignorant things we’ve heard others say about Africa. And while many are afraid of “the dark continent,” others see it as ground zero for the next boom in technology, telecommunications, and business. Recently, the New York Times ran an editorial discussing whether or not Africa is really “the next big thing” or if the current conversations about “the New Africa” is just hype. In the piece Ioannis Gatsiounis spoke of Africa’s recent successes, but also highlighted its challenges. He writes:…

Even Julius Caesar supposedly died a martyr's death, and was resurrected as Divus Iulius (Divine Julius) after his murder in 44 BCE. When feeling down, do you consider it a pick-me-up to peruse a store’s cosmetics department, and perhaps purchase that creamy lipstick? Because you deserve it, after all. And, are you waiting all year to hear Pantone’s color of the year announcement so you can run to your nail salon and have your toes painted this new, hot color? Well, if you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, I got a little sumthin’ sumthin’ for you. Move in closer. (I look around the room.)…

It occurred to me the other day that I don’t know when anything comes on TV anymore. Ever since my DVR had me at “hello,” I seem to refuse to commit my brain to memorizing TV schedules the way we did “back in the day”…a la Cosby Show Thursdays. TV is a great refuge for those days (or weeks) when I need to wind down from all the hoopla and get lost in someone else’s drama…real or fake. That said, while our television watching interests change over time, here are a few shows we at The Vyne are watching now (in no particular order). Do you have any…

By Siddiqu “The Personal Trainer” High levels of fruits, vegetables, greens and beans help you lose weight because they are low in calories, high in volume and high in critically important nutrients. On a very practical level they fill you up, without loading you up with fat and calories. And when your stomach is filled up with high volume, low calorie food, there is less room for other bad stuff. There is also a growing body of evidence that shows that plant-based foods help to control food cravings and overeating. They are nutrient dense, which simply means they are packed with…

Really Tami so now you're sorry.   You reduced a grown ass woman to tears and had her beg you to give her back her own purse.  Who do you think you are? Are Chris Paul and Dwight Howard headed to the Westside?  That's the big question as sports outlets are all a buzz with the news that the L.A. Lakers are gearing up to make a power play to trade 3 of their stars - Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol in order to bring Chris and Dwight to sunny California.  The thought of Chris and Dwight going to the Lakers with Kobe Bryant does sounds interesting but we've seen this sorted dream team already and it doesn't work.  Can you say Miami Heat Big 3 deal of last year which was more like a big flop.   But the two biggest questions on…

Clearly I have been sleeping, but I am now fully awake to the music of Gregory Porter. Don't know how I missed his Grammy-nominated debut album Water. Other standout tracks so far are "On My Way To Harlem"   and "Be Good (Lion's Song)" the title track to his latest album.  This powerful modern day protest song is prophetic in light of the Trayvon Martin case.  In Porter's telling it is 3 pieces of licorice and not Skittles and iced tea that leaves the young man dead at the end of a police man's gun. It remain's to be seen if cities will burn…

    Quentin McCall
    12 May 2012 | 4:44 am
Many of you know I lost my grandmother on March 2, 2012. Some of you are aware of the closeness and love we shared. My grandmother was my mother and father. Like some of you reading this, I grew up without my mother and father. My granny filled in the gap and raised me. We had some very challenging times, but my granny sacrificed everything to make sure I was OK. She went without, so I could have. I can still recall all the beautiful things she did for me, but the greatest thing she showed me was unconditional love.     My grandmother was always meek, humble, gentle, loving, nurturing and…

The relationship ended. No great reason, no explanation. Things just took a hard turn and fell apart. So, maybe looking back, there were some warning signs of problems. Communication was difficult (maybe non-existent, at times) or emotions would flare for no apparent reason. However, there was nothing significant enough to justify such a negative end to a relationship that started so well. Nothing justified actions that would cause so much hurt! This scenario is all too common. When it happens… we want answers. Why did they cheat? Why did they change? Why did we stop moving forward? Why did…

  • For the Ladies: Single, Content, and Courageous

    Quentin McCall
    22 Mar 2012 | 7:00 am
Waiting for the man we believe God for can feel as if there is not much sand left in the hourglass. Getting older, all of one’s accomplishments and the personal dragons we have slain can falsely serve as a notice that it is time to get a husband, in order to complete “the dream.” Those lonely moments keep creeping in from time to time, and desire for companionship is only getting stronger. The fear of being single longer than planned can disrupt internal peace, unless we make a purposeful choice to, not only wait for God’s timing, but to wait with courage. Then we will not…

    20 Mar 2012 | 7:00 am
Loving a woman can be a beautiful life experience for a man. A woman can be nurturing, loving, selfless, warm, friendly, uplifting, spiritual and virtuous. However, what happens when it is a woman along with her children? The stigma of being a single mother is powerful in society, but it is based in stereotypes. Many people have various assumptions, but how often do they seek to understand or learn the story of the single mother? Rarely does it happen; which is why I feel men have to approach dating single mothers differently.     Some men already know they will not marry a woman with…
