Tucked away in someone else’s shoe box of adolescent artifacts, there might be a picture of you in garish clothes and with an outdated ‘do, your arm around a high school squeeze. The President of the United States is no different. These previously unpublished photos, obtained exclusively by TIME from Obama’s schoolmate Kelli Allman (née McCormack), show a 17-year-old Barack Obama on the night of his senior prom. Barry spent his days at the Punahou School in Hawaii studying, shooting hoops and goofing off with his friends. Greg Orme, a fellow varsity basketball player, was Obama’s…

Movie Review: Hangover 3 – The Wolfpack Ventures to Back to Vegas
INSIDE BLACK HOLLYWOOD23 May 2013 | 8:14 amWhen we last left the wolfpack, the boys were over in Thailand for the wedding of Stu (Ed Helms) and Lauren (Jamie Chung). Of course, before the bride and groom could tie the knot (Justin Bartha), the men found themselves separated from Doug and suffering from amnesia following a wild night of partying on the seedy side of Bangkok. But that was two years ago.... But that was two years ago and now everybody has settled down safely into humdrum, uneventful lives in suburban Los Angeles. Everybody except Alan (Zach Galifiniakis), that is. He went off his meds recently which might explain… -

The New York Times and the Left’s Stockholm Syndrome
This Week in Blackness | TWiB!23 May 2013 | 9:07 amThe story is so old the original now exists in digital form only behind Rolling Stone’s paywall, but I remember it well enough to recite the essential details by heart. In any event, it involves a public relations firm known as the Rendon Group, which was hired by the Clinton Administration to create the fiction of an organized expatriate Iraqi resistance known as the Iraqi National Congress (“INC”). The Xbox One: A Tale of Hubris
23 May 2013 | 8:41 amThe Xbox One: Means More Than You Think. I thought it best to wait 48 hours before weighing in on the Xbox One. While there are some statistical benefits to being first, there is nothing personally satisfying about bellowing a knee-jerk reaction at the top of my lungs. Microsoft had effectively bought itself the benefit of the doubt. I use my Xbox 360 for such a variety of tasks that my assessment of its sequel must be measured and thoughtful. The Xbox 360 changed the way we use our game consoles forever. I appreciate that. After much research and consideration. One word stood tall. Hubris. -

Mr. Morales, who allegedly greeted them with a gay slur and then told them, “You look like gay wrestlers,” according to court records. In an interview with police, Mr. Carson’s friend said the two walked back to Mr. Morales and asked him what he meant by the remarks, a law-enforcement official said. Who Decides What Is And Isn’t A Scandal
22 May 2013 | 3:08 pmI suppose it’s not too surprising that journalists get upset when they become embroiled in criminal investigations. And, truth be told, I don’t blame them. I expect people to protect their own interests, especially when the government comes knocking on their door. Still, it’s interesting to see what gets the media’s goat and what doesn’t. By now, we’re all well aware of the Obama Administration’s recent actions against the Associated Press and Fox News’ James Rosen. The past few days the media has been equally up in arms about both, although in the case of the AP phone records… -

Behind-the-Scenes Obama's Chief-of-Staff, Denis McDonough, Manages Administration's Response to Scandal Crisis
24 May 2013 | 5:37 amby Lloyd Grove"ONE TEAM, one fight!"It's hardly surprising that White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough likes to repeat this battle cry in his pep talks to colleagues: an aging athlete, like his boss President Obama, the 43-year-old McDonough played safety for the St. John's University "Fighting Johnnies" in his home state of Minnesota. And on Monday and Tuesday of this week, it was surely "one team, one fight" as McDonough and his staff orchestrated the White House response to the devastation in Oklahoma. But a week ago, as they coped with one political flap after another, McDonough's… -

Blacks, Conservatives and Plantations
23 May 2013 | 1:04 pmWhy do Republicans keep endorsing the most extreme and hyperbolic African-American voices — those intent on comparing blacks who support the Democratic candidates to slaves? That idea, which only a black person could invoke without being castigated for the flagrant racial overtones, is a trope to which an increasingly homogeneous Republican Party seems to subscribe. The Snob Among Hello Beautiful's 25 Women to Know 2013
17 May 2013 | 8:44 amYup. Yours truly, along with Francesca Ramsey, Patrice Grell Yursik (aka Afrobella), Awesomely Luvvie, Angela Yee, Necole Bitchie and many more were all honored by sites Hello Beautiful and Black Planet for being among the 25 Women to Watch in 2013. Last year (and this year) have been quite the years for the ol' Snob as I wound up in all sorts of places: editor-at-large for Clutch Magazine Online, quoted in Ms. Magazine, head writer of a TV show (that sadly was cancelled, waaaaaaaah!), a regular on NPR (Happy Birthday, Michel Martin of Tell Me More!), I'm writing a book (as always), I'm… -

The Snob Quoted This Month In Ms. Magazine
10 May 2013 | 4:42 amGuess which story I was interviewed for? Durr. Beyonce. It's always Beyonce. Point #1: I like how Ms. found one of the most conservative photos ever of King Bey. It's like a photo from the time she got bored and decided to enter and win the Miss America beauty pageant. Point #2: That headline is missing a question mark as in the interview with author Janell Hobson we were debating if Beyonce's actions and lyrics could be considered feminist. VERDICT IS STILL OUT! Check the magazine out on newsstands this spring and summer. I'm also quoted this week in an article about black people and mental… -
The Snob Talks Danny Brown and Consent on NPR
10 May 2013 | 4:25 amRapper Danny BrownThis Wednesday on NPR's Tell Me More with Michel Martin, I was on discussing rapper Danny Brown being fellated by a fan from the audience as he was rapping on stage. Rapper Kitty Pryde, who is touring with Brown, condemned the act, calling it sexual assault. For me, this was about consent (which is the basis of sexual assault). Whether Brown enjoyed it or not is a non-factor as he had no way of consenting to anything if he was on stage performing. Despite popular belief, men (especially black men) are not sex automatons, ready to go at anytime incapable of being molested,… -

In the past I used to say, "Oh, I'm not a mother" but that seemed to endlessly disappoint the black men who said this to me with all the vigor saying it to their own beloved mothers. So now, unless someone on Twitter or Facebook says it to me (aka, my friends who should know I ain't birthed nobody's baby), I just smile and nod and go on. But this happens because I'm in my mid-30s and, statistically, I should be…

Virginia is only for lovers if both lovers look the same.
22 May 2013 | 4:22 pmToday my racism chase is taking me to Virginia. The thing about the big R is that it affects all of us both black and white. In this latest case its latest victim was a gentleman from the majority population. (h/t my twitter fam Robin for this story.) "A Virginia couple was shocked to find a police officer in front of their home when they returned from running errands, but they were even more surprised by the reason for the cop's visit-- to question whether or not they were in fact their children's parents. "This is like a war zone", and more ghetto tours.
20 May 2013 | 4:32 pmI have to start this post by saying that my thoughts go out to the people of Oklahoma after those massive storms hit them today. Twisters, my friends, are no joke. They can do some serious damage.I am just hearing that several students who were trapped in an elementary school were pulled out alive. I can't imagine what the parents of the children who are still missing their children are going through. Some of those parents are trying hard to get to their children but are being held back. It is times like these that we realize we need the federal government. -

19 May 2013 | 4:22 pmPresident Obama was at Dr. King's alma mater today, and he had some strong words for the young men there. Some of you Negroes are saying that he was just having a Sistah Souljah moment at the expense of the Morehouse men, and that he is always airing black folk's dirty laundry when he speaks to a large black group.I have to respectfully disagree. That message the president sent today was on point and it needed to be delivered. Dead Giveaway - a teachable moment?
9 May 2013 | 11:11 pmHow can a song be so problematic yet so catchy? Also *dead* at the link to the cover song at the end. This story has been covered on various NPR stations over the last couple of days, not so much focused on the rescued women but the politics of presenting/ portraying the hero in the media has sparked discussions of race and class. Foul Language on the Bus
5 Apr 2013 | 4:10 pmI was riding the bus today and a bunch of young black guys (25 years old and younger, I believe) were ranting about life. That was fine, but their language was so horrendous. "Bitch" this and "Nigga" that and "shit" this. They went on and on, getting louder and louder, until the conversation turned to how they never wanted to "bang basic bitches" and instead, would turn to teachers and deans and school counselors. Yeah, that was an actual conversation.Normally I'm immune to this kind of language, but near the front of the bus, a little girl (maybe… -

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is So Very Revealing as We Try to Make Sense of the Age of Obama: Do Share, in This Same Moment, What Art Speaks to You?
24 May 2013 | 12:39 amOn Fridays, we will be indulging ourselves from this point forward here on We Are Respectable Negroes. There may be a guest post, a video to discuss, some questions, random poetry, or prose. Why not? it is a Friday after all. Why limit ourselves? In discussing how hyper-conservatism/neo liberalism has corrupted men like Tom Coburn and James Inhofe from Oklahoma, a moral and ethical failing revealed in the aftermath of the tornadoes in that state, I referenced the great poet and philosopher John Donne. As I reflect upon the conspiracy mongering of the Tea Party GOP and the Right-wing… -
Introducing E.W. Jackson, The Republican Party's Newest "Black Folks are on a Plantation" Political Race Minstrel
23 May 2013 | 10:51 amThe Republican Party has an obsession with black voters, slavery analogies, and plantations. As I have discussed many times, the Right's obsession with suggesting that black voters who choose to support the Democratic Party are slaves, and that Black Conservatives are "liberators" like Harriet Tubman is an abuse of a historical tragedy for cynical political ends. Moreover, no other group would have their political agency and legacy so stigmatized and mocked. To point. I have yet to hear the loyalty of Jewish-Americans to the Democratic Party caricaturized as something akin to people who would… -
Game Recognizes Game in a World Where Politics is Professional Wrestling: Howard Stern Interviews Alex Jones
22 May 2013 | 11:48 pmHoward Stern is one of the greatest interviewers and media personalities in American history. Alex Jones is also an amazing media personality who commands a large audience. Both are managers of, and ring leaders in, a human zoo.I admire both men for their hustle. As is my catch phrase and quotable, and based on some of the comments here on We Are Respectable Negroes from time to time, I do wonder how many in the conspiracy theory paranoid style in American politics community realize that Alex Jones is doing a "worked shoot" in the theater of "politics as professional wrestling?"Yes, there are… -
Progress or Peril? The CIA Writes Black Slaves and Free People Back into the History of the National Security State
22 May 2013 | 9:00 amUnion officers got so many valuable pieces of intelligence from slaves that the reports were put in a special category: “Black Dispatches.” Runaway slaves, many of them conscripted to work on Confederate fortifications, gave the Union Army a continually flowing stream of intelligence. So did slaves who volunteered to be stay-in-place agents. Tens of thousands of ex-slaves fought and died for the Union in military units. Less known is the work of other African-Americans who risked their lives in secret, gathering intelligence or while entering enemy territory as scouts. Brigadier… -
A Devastating Defeat Brings Out the Worst Moment of Poor Sportsmanship Ever
22 May 2013 | 12:41 amA quick post for the ghetto nerd set.I was joking with my friend Gordon Gartrelle over Twitter about how he suggested that fans will describe whoever loses the Grizzlies vs. Spurs game as being "devastated."Maybe. For my dollar, one of the most devastating losses in the history of sports was Randy Pederson's defeat by (a much older and should have been retired) Ernie Schlegel in the 1995 PBA Touring Players Championship. Schlegel's celebration was also one of the most unsportsmanlike moments in televised sports history. His yelling, "For the old people!" is imminently quotable.I can't resist…

Every Woman’s Worst Nightmare
22 May 2013 | 9:40 amAnd now for something COMPLETELY different and a topic I don’t normally address…but this week I feel compelled to because of what I saw. Red calendar via Shutterstock Picture this. I’m stuck at the back of a crowded bus headed down a busy downtown Chicago street. I look out the window and see two teenage boys make the ewww face at each other, and they seem like they’re in disbelief at what they’ve just seen. Natural Hair Confession – I Don’t Really Have A Hair Regimen
21 May 2013 | 4:14 pmWhen I first went natural, it was all I thought about. I spent so much time in my first three or four years of natural hair, figuring it out. Creating a natural hair regimen can seem daunting at first. The products your hair responded to when it was relaxed, won’t have the same effects anymore. Your hair needs totally change. There are a million and one blogs, message boards, photos and YouTube video tutorials to check out, to try to answer your hair questions. But what it truly boils down to is trial and error. I think it took me maybe 4 years to FINALLY come to peace with my… -
Experiencing A Different Side of Vegas. Inside The MLife Experience
20 May 2013 | 9:10 amI’ll admit it, I had a pre-existing prejudice against Las Vegas. It was cemented by the reputation the city had built for itself, branding itself as a perpetual bachelor party that catered to those interested in gambling and indulging in extreme, excessive inebriation. A place for people with something to escape and something to hide. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. All of the negative cliches that go with that cast an impression in my mind. Even after numerous visits (my sister in law lives out there), I still was unable to shake the mental image of Vegas = The Hangover. And… -
Ten Realizations About Being In Your Thirties
14 May 2013 | 10:06 amLately I’ve been seeing a lot of my friends freaking out about turning 30, or being 30. This year I turned 34, so I think I have a little perspective to share. Being in your 30’s can actually be pretty awesome. Traffic sign via Shutterstock. I think it isn’t fair or cool that so much of the pressure that we feel about turning 30, centers on women. Celebrating Life After Death
21 May 2013 | 7:27 pm{liberatormagazine.com exclusive feature} For the past few days I have seen a lot of negativity about Notorious, the new movie about the life of rapper Notorious B.I.G. Most of the criticism seems to stem from anger over the film's "glorification" of the street hustler ambition Biggie personifies. Others complain that the film fails to deliver the gravitas of Wallace's life; instead of a complicated, probing, thorough compilation, we get a glossy, "made-for-industry" story which archetypes the stereotypical "Black male" narrative. 21 May 2013 | 5:31 am{liberatormagazine.com exclusive feature} Brother Malcolm was and is one of the most prolific and important beings to walk this earth. And I know that in theory all the things that are created have the potential to be important, to last and inspire generations. Still, I think there is power in the ability to name something, to be able to call on it and refer back to it. To say, "Malcolm X" and to know exactly what that means. As the late great scholar Dr. John Henrik Clarke put it in Malcolm X The Man, and His Times: "Prior to the arrival of Malcolm X on the scene, most of white America… -

Beyond Love Comtemplation
20 May 2013 | 3:29 amI want the kind of love that endures, and uplifts. I want the stuff legends are made of. I cannot get that kind of love by wishing for it or simply daydreaming about it. Love of self, of life, of everything on the planet and perhaps beyond. God loves me and there is noting I need to do but breathe. The other part of God's love is my call to love as God loves me. … -

Hours later, and the thought of his passing is still as shocking, numbing as it was the first second I heard it reported, and later confirmed across the media last evening. Old-School Tips for Better Finances
24 May 2013 | 9:57 am(The Root) -- I will never forget my father calling out to my sisters and me, "Turn off the lights," as we went from one room to another in our ranch-style Baltimore home, leaving on all the lights in our wake. His next line pretty consistently was, "Do you think I'm made of money?!" We would huff and puff and eventually retrace our steps and turn off the lights. But I distinctly remember being frustrated and thinking that my very strict father was simply too strict. "What difference did it make?" my child's smart-alecky mind wanted to know. Now, I didn't dare defy my father, either by not… -

We're both busy with work and our relationships and don't speak very often, maybe once every other week. Mostly we text and send emails sporadically to keep in touch. Our friendship is strictly platonic, but my boyfriend of almost three years has suddenly become irrational and insecure, saying that he is 'uncomfortable' with me having a male best friend, and he has asked me to end that relationship. I cherish my relationship and my… -

Local Election Officials Show Bias Against Latino Voters, Especially on Voter ID
23 May 2013 | 8:15 amThree Harvard grad students experimented with whether there was ethnic prejudice in local election administration by emailing every local or county election official, commission and supervisor in 48 states with Latino-sounding and non-Latino-sounding names and examined the responses. What they found were that local election officials were three-and-a-half to four-times more likely to respond to the emails that came from the non-Latino name, Greg Walsh, than the Latino name, Luis Rodriguez. The gap in those responses grew three points wider when their emails contained questions about voter ID. -

Defense attorney Don West argued in his written response filed Tuesday that the marijuana use is relevant because Zimmerman told a police dispatcher shortly before shooting Trayvon that he believed the Miami Gardens teenager was suspicious and may have been on drugs. The Orlando Sentinel points out West's response comes two… -
Senate Accepts Deal to Kick Formerly Incarcerated Off Food Benefits
23 May 2013 | 7:13 amYesterday, Sen. Vitter of Louisiana offered up an amendment to permanently drop anyone ever convicted of a violent crime from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). According to Robert Greenstein, president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Democrats in the Senate obliged him. The amendment is for a farm bill, which is currently being debated in the Senate. Says Greenstein: The amendment would bar from SNAP (food stamps), for life, anyone who was ever convicted of one of a specified list of violent crimes at any time -- even if they committed the crime decades ago… -
Voter Suppression Group Sues IRS For Delaying Their Voter Suppression
22 May 2013 | 10:04 amWhen IRS officials publicly apologized last week for sorting out tax-exemption applications from tea party groups, one tea party network seized the moment to claim victimization by the federal government. True the Vote, a conglomerate of conservative tea party and "Patriot" groups across the nation seeking restrictive voting laws, claimed that their application for 501(c)3 status was wrongfully put through rigorous review by the IRS. Now they are suing the IRS claiming that due to their "perceived conservative policy positions and affiliation with Tea Party organizations" they were…

Grieving Daughters Kicked Out of King of Prussia Mall For ‘F— Cancer’ Hats
23 May 2013 | 3:41 pmThree young women faced every daughter’s nightmare when their mother passed away from cancer. Before her passing, her children, Makia Underwood, 32, Zakia Clark, 29, and Tasha Clark, 27, began to wear hats and shirts that read “F— Cancer.” The “C” in “F—” is replaced by a breast cancer awareness ribbon. It was their way of addressing a disease that they watched steal their mother from them. “That’s how we feel,” Zakia Clark told Philly.com. “It took our mom away. It’s a demon. It’s the devil. Lee Rigby, the 25 year-old drummer and father of a 2 year-old, was on active duty when he was reportedly attacked by two assailants at the gate of the Royal Artillery Barracks (location shown above). The men allegedly hit Rigby with a car before beheading him with meat cleavers and machetes in front of a shellshocked crowd of dozens of civilians. After the beheading, the attackers shouted “Allahu Akbar” and demanded that passerbys take video of them. In front of the camera, one of… -
Ghetto Tours To “The Bronx” Make a Spectacle Out Of Poor People
23 May 2013 | 1:46 pmA New York City tour company is drawing ire for promising to stop by the Bronx ghetto as part of their excursion. For $45, Real Bronx Tours took tourists from Manhattan past a housing project, a “pickpocket hangout” according to a tour guide and food-pantry lines. The tour participants, who are mainly European, were encouraged to take in the sights of the South Bronx that became known for “drugs, gangs, crime and murders” in the ’70s and ’80s “from a safe distance.” Bronx President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito were… -
It Happened To Me: I Became Homeless On Purpose To Overcome My Fear of Failure
23 May 2013 | 1:19 pmWhat happens when your life starts falling apart? Do you try desperately to hold it together so you won’t feel like a failure or would you do the unthinkable, allow your whole world to crumble and alow the chips to fall where they may? I was nearing my final semester of grad school and I was over extended with bills, life, my sons and basically everything. I was also in counseling trying to sort things out when out of the blue, one fateful weekend, my car was taken away… -

Unite and Take a Stance
23 May 2013 | 11:23 amPeace be unto you reader. This week I would like to dedicate this article to 22 year old Julian Dawkins of Alexandria, Virgina; who was murdered by an off-duty Virgina sheriff deputy. As of yet, no charges has been filed in this case, where an off duty, so-called, officer of the peace shot and killed an unarmed man in the street. My heart and prayers go out to his family, and may they find peace and justice in this matter. Is it me, but does it seems it's almost like the badge stands lawlessness? Everyday I hear of news reports about a police officer, on and off duty, murdering someone, but… -
Advice on Exploring Erotica in Your Writing
15 May 2013 | 7:30 amMediaBistro's Morning Media Menu had a conversation with author Jamie Brenner about advice for writers looking to explore this newly crowded genre. An excerpt from Brenner: My first erotic novel came out two years ago. The landscape feels completely different. There is not just the hope to reach a mainstream audience with erotic novel, but the expectation that success is reaching everyone, not just the genre readers. Fifty Shades of Grey really raised the bar for that. At the same time, working with and against this tide, with the explosion of self-publishing. Suddenly, it’s like… -
Short Excerpt from "Like Litter in the Wind" By L. M. Ross
14 May 2013 | 5:00 am“Essentially, we dream because there are songs inside our souls, though we sometimes forget their melody. We dream because our hearts are whispering singers, inspiring us to chorus. We dream because without their light and color, life would be a dreary and prosaic mistake. Each day of our existence on Earth, whether carefully or carelessly, we compose the curious Opus of Our Selves. We draw and plan and etch our dreams, we compose the lyrics upon this parchment of the soul. And yet, unexpectedly, a strong breeze can come and blow havoc upon the thin tethers of our dreams. Dreams, they have… -

This single about God making a way out of the darkness is radio perfect, a joyous traditional-style hand-clapper with a purring B3 in the musician pit. New Vacation Trend: Luxury + Nature Getaways
17 May 2013 | 5:25 pmBy Kailei R. Over the past few years I have enjoyed vacationing in places that may not be your typical places — places help you get in touch with nature, have plenty of relaxation activities and also give you some of those luxurious amenities that we all love. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of Miami, San Juan and Mexico getaways (along with everyone else) and love me some beach and sun, but I have also enjoyed my vacations in some off-the-beaten-path locales. I recently had lunch with a few of my Chicago girlfriends and found out that I am not alone! A few of my fellow… -
The Girlfriend Tribunal: Necessary or Nosey?
17 May 2013 | 1:33 pmBy Keesha B. Think back to when you were in college. The good ol’ days when we lived in the moment, thought about the future with endless possibilities and had ridiculous email addresses like “cuteandsassy@xxxmail.com”. Now think back to your relationships at that time. Those sometimes fun, part time controversial, always emotional, roller coaster ride relationships that seemed to be the most important thing in your AND your friends lives. You’d spend hours with your girls pouring over your latest relationship drama. Whether that drama was the letter you found in his… -

Will Anthony Weiner win over black voters in New York City?
24 May 2013 | 5:30 amThe morning after announcing his run for mayor via video, Anthony Weiner’s very first campaign stop was in Harlem, shaking hands with commuters at a subway stop on the corner of 125th Street and Lenox Avenue. Weiner’s choice of kickoff location reveals a great deal about New York’s minefield of racial and ethnic politics – and serves as a reminder of Weiner’s past missteps. The crush of reporters who swarmed around Weiner focused, almost without exception, on the juicy story of how Weiner resigned from Congress in disgrace two years ago, shortly after a conservative website… -

Fred Patrick, a neighbor of the family, told WCNC that the son “seems real nice to me. I mean, he is real respectful.” Fellow neighbor, Tiffany Covington, said kids will be kids. “If would be nice if they asked, but they don’t,”…

The New York Times and the Left’s Stockholm Syndrome
23 May 2013 | 9:07 amThe story is so old the original now exists in digital form only behind Rolling Stone’s paywall, but I remember it well enough to recite the essential details by heart. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that, because Common Dreams reproduced the story for us. In any event, it involves a public relations firm known as the Rendon Group, which was hired by the Clinton Administration to create the fiction of an organized expatriate Iraqi resistance known as the Iraqi National Congress (“INC”). Whatever Clinton’s reasons were to create this fiction, history shows that he did not use it as… -
The Xbox One: A Tale of Hubris
Hubris. -
Hate Rising
22 May 2013 | 4:28 pmOn Sunday May 19, Mark Carson was walking with a friend in NYC’s West Village, not too far from the site of the historic Stone Wall Inn, when Elliot Morales called them a gay slur and started an altercation would end in murder. Mr. Morales, who allegedly greeted them with a gay slur and then told them, “You look like gay wrestlers,” according to court records. In an interview with police, Mr. Carson’s friend said the two walked back to Mr. Morales and asked him what he meant by the remarks, a law-enforcement official said. The friend told police that Mr. Morales asked… -
Who Decides What Is And Isn’t A Scandal
22 May 2013 | 3:08 pmI suppose it’s not too surprising that journalists get upset when they become embroiled in criminal investigations. And, truth be told, I don’t blame them. I expect people to protect their own interests, especially when the government comes knocking on their door. Still, it’s interesting to see what gets the media’s goat and what doesn’t. By now, we’re all well aware of the Obama Administration’s recent actions against the Associated Press and Fox News’ James Rosen. The past few days the media has been equally up in arms about both, although in the case of the AP phone records… -

Movie Review: Hangover 3 – The Wolfpack Ventures to Back to Vegas
23 May 2013 | 8:14 amWhen we last left the wolfpack, the boys were over in Thailand for the wedding of Stu (Ed Helms) and Lauren (Jamie Chung).

Halle & Hanks Play Multiple Characters in Cloud Atlas
20 May 2013 | 10:50 amBased on David Mitchell’s groundbreaking novel of the same name, Cloud Atlas offers an intriguing and visually-captivating cinematic experience that’s well worth the investment for its unorthodox narrative alone. But be forewarned... that you would be well advised to arrive at the theater already familiar with the cryptic best seller’s inscrutable plot structure, if you hope to have a decent idea about what’s going on. Since I hadn’t read the British Book Award-winner, I initially found myself quite baffled by the surrealistic saga’s elliptical storyline. Still, I was able to… -

22 May 2013 | 7:12 amTrue beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps but beautiful skin is in how clear you can make it. I know I know. Blemishes give you character. Twists Challenge: Week 1 Recap
20 May 2013 | 4:11 amOn Mother’s Day I kicked off a 30 Day Twists Challenge. Touching base with ladies over on the Facebook Group, It’s All About The Curls. This challenge was birthed to help us busy moms to tuck our hair away and go about the regular business or busy-ness of life without worrying about our hair. Here’s how I styled my twists for most of the week: So easy and low manipulation. I didn’t capture every single style because I mostly just stuffed my twists into a ponytail. On Friday night, I released my twists to pre-poo and lightly finger detangle my hair. On Saturday morning,… -
Review: Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer and Blissful Lengths Kukinut Oil Elixir
17 May 2013 | 7:00 amOMG I am going to get right to it. I freaking LOVE (L-O-V-E) these Curls products! I received them for no cost at the Let Down Your Hair Expo that took place in Brooklyn several weeks ago. The scent of these hair products by Curls is intoxicating. They smell SO good. Even better than the scent, these two products play nicely with my natural hair. It is such a pleasant surprise for me to be pleased with the products I received because a couple of years ago I purchased Curls Creme Brulee from Target and gave it away at a swap meet. It left my hair so tangled I never thought I’d use… -
Necessary: Aubrey Organics Green Tea & Clay Facial Mask
15 May 2013 | 4:13 amMy skin has gone through some changes over the years. I used to have very clear skin when I was younger. Then, when I hit my early 30s, I caught an awful case of acne. I think it was hormones but I digress. Fast forward to today and I’m back to almost having perfectly clear skin again (minus some old blemishing). What I’ve discovered is never under estimate the power of a good facial mask. Having skin that’s prone to being oily in the summer and dry in the winter, I had to discover a product that would tone and tighten my skin while also removing impurities. I think I… -
