Confronting the Staggering Toll of STDs in the African American Community
20 Nov 2009 | 8:16 amFiled under: Sexual Health African-Americans continue to bear a greater burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. A CDC report released this week shows that, just as is the case for the HIV epidemic, African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by other STDs. Both the number of STD cases reported in 2008, and rates of all three nationally reported STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis) are highest among African-Americans. One of the most staggering statistics revealed in the report is that gonorrhea rates among blacks are… -
S-E-X: Now that I've Got Your Attention, This Really Is About S-T-Ds
20 Nov 2009 | 7:59 amFiled under: Sexual Health There are two things human beings do very well, run their mouths and, ahem...procreate. Trust me, right now someone in this world, actually probably many people, are getting their collective freaks on, in famliar and unfamiliar ways. There are people who should be having sex as well as people who shouldn't (at least not with each other). Through the 2 million-year history of our species, every generation got here through the act of coitus, and nobody asked, "Was it good for you, baby?" because we were boning before we had learned to talk. But, oddly enough, in… -
Men Cheat Down? Women Cheat Up?
20 Nov 2009 | 7:16 amFiled under: Relationships, Infidelity, E MaleThe other day my attention was turned to the Black Voices Forums where the subject of cheating was getting heat. What lit the match was the suggestion that men cheat 'down' (with less attractive women) and women cheat' up' (with men who make more money and more moves than their current boyfriend/husband). Interesting. As a married man for the past four years, I thought for a fleeting moment that perhaps I should just walk around this bed of hot coals. After all, I wouldn't want someone in my household to "misunderstand" my casual observations on… -
Film Review: Sandra Bullock Shines in 'The Blind Side'
20 Nov 2009 | 7:00 amFiled under: Reviews With films like 'Precious' out in theaters, demonstrating that anyone can overcome the grittiness of poverty and a disturbing urban life, here's come another with a similar story. But the difference is that this film is based on a true story. Based on the nonfiction best seller by Michael Lewis on football player Michael Oher and directed by John Lee Hancock, 'The Blind Side' is an emotionally uplifting tale in which Sandra Bullock excels in her best performance since 'Crash.' While the trailer suggests that the film, about a poor kid taken in by a white family and begins…

Hate Group, FAIR, Looking for “Ethnically Ambiguous” Actors- Think You Have What it Takes?
20 Nov 2009 | 1:45 pmWe just got word that the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated a hate group, is holding a casting call in Atlanta tomorrow for a new web video that will change the hearts and minds of the average American. Think you have what it takes to be a mouthpiece for hate? They will pay $500 to “ethnically ambiguous” actors in their 20s or 30s, with no Southern accent, who can work with a teleprompter — to help them put a modern face on their extreme agenda and disguise their clear ties to white nationalism. FAIR spends… -

Open Letter To Michael Steele, Drop The Slang And Stand Up To Racism
20 Nov 2009 | 8:41 amDear Michael Steele, You are in between a rock in a hard place. You seem to talk one way to Black people and another to your Republican colleagues. Do you really think white Republicans are scared of you? It seems like you are more scared of white Republicans. When you called Rush Limbaugh an ugly, incendiary voice, you apologized promptly. So while the GOP might not be scared of you, you are definitely scared of Rush Limbaugh. It seems to me that both white Republicans and the African American community seem to view you as a joke. Why do you think Republicans scared of you? Is it because…

So, Is the Military Too "PC," Or We'd Rather Just Demonize Arab Americans?
18 Nov 2009 | 9:49 pmAs someone who is appalled by the Islamophobic coverage of the Fort Hood controversy (seriously, did we ever implicate an entire race or group when the lone gunman was a white man, or when the domestic terrorist was Timothy McVeigh?), I find this smart critique of the media coverage by Alia Malek in the Washington Post a worthwhile read:Arab-American history is long and deep in the United States but Arab and Muslim Americans are not part of how we imagine who we are as Americans or how we perceive what makes up the American experience. Now, in the national discussion among commentators,… -
Why Hasn't Precious Received The Color Purple Treatment?
16 Nov 2009 | 7:48 amHere's a really insightful review by Salamishah Tillet, founder of A Long Walk Home, which uses art therapy to address violence against women, in an article in The Root, titled "The Color Precious." The movie is finally opening this coming weekend in my area, so I'm looking forward to doing my own evaluation. The Color PreciousLee Daniels’ second film, Precious, fared quite well last weekend. Despite its soft release in only 18 theaters, Precious pulled in a remarkable $1.8 million, suggesting that on average, each theater made $100,000 off its showing. Sesame Street Smarts
8 Nov 2009 | 7:42 pmSesame Street, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, is such a staple in our culture. Nurturing us with our favorite muppets like Kermit the Frog and Big Bird (my favorites were Grover and Cookie Monster), teaching children diversity and multiracial, as well as multilingual, education, and bringing "head start" to urban children (hence its urban setting), this show has always been progressive. This week, First Lady Michelle Obama will make an appearance to promote healthy and organic food. So, imagine my surprise to learn that the Fox News Network actually tried to make a "controversy"… -
The Impossibility of Representation: The Spectacle of the Abused Black Woman
7 Nov 2009 | 9:36 amHow do you represent black women's pain? I mean, really represent it? How do you represent it as something that someone else can empathize with (not just non-blacks and men but black women ourselves)? You see, for so long our "pain," our abuse, has been so distorted, so stereotyped, that any representation becomes problematic. I'm thinking of Rhianna's recent sit-down interview on 20/20 last night with Diane Sawyer. She was so self-conscious, very much on the defensive (from the Sharon Stonesque Basic Instinct posture to the furrowed brow that indicated she was ready to mask herself.

Florida Classic inspires bonding amid rivalry
20 Nov 2009 | 6:42 amJeff Kunerth, Orlando Sentinel - To Orlando’s black community, the Florida Classic between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman universities Saturday is far more than just a football game. It is a full-body cultural event that extends beyond the students and alumni of those two historically black colleges. To Andrea DeLoach, the influx of middle-class, college-educated, black professionals is a return to her years at Spelman College in Atlanta. It’s like a homecoming — where home comes to you. To her husband, Earnest, an attorney who grew up in Central Florida, the Classic is a… -

She told a standing-room-only crowd at Southern University no arrests may be possible. The FBI compiled a list of 100 open cases, she said. Tikia K. Hamilton: Dear Chris Rock, Let Black Women "Do" Our Own Hair
19 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amBy Tikia K. Hamilton Admittedly, a friend had prepared me in advance for some of the inadequacies to be found in Chris Rock's film Good Hair, and I am probably a bit behind the rest of the world (and I do mean rest of the world, see problems with film below) in viewing it. Still, it left me with a few thoughts ... The very first problem with the movie is that it is told through the eyes of a person who can never truly experience what it means to be a black woman living amidst a world of images that reinforce the notion that, while black can sometimes be trendy, it can never truly represent… -
Afronerd: Why Would Anyone Want to Be Black? And Other Stupid Questions.
18 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amBy Afronerd Why would anyone want to be black? This is the question Breitbart's Burt Prelutsky is asking! We can't be in the 21st Century.... From an Oct. 22 post by Burt Prelutsky at Andrew Breitbart's Big Hollywood blog: My final question is, why, in 2009 America, are mulattoes invariably identified as blacks? Surely there is nothing wrong with being a mulatto. There is no stigma attached, as once there was. It merely refers to those who have one white parent and one black. There are many notable individuals who are mulattoes, including Halle Berry, Derek Jeter, Lisa Bonet and Barack… -

Then I went on a whirlwind road trip to Boston, NYC and Washington, D.C. with my friend Dorothy -- right after getting out of the hospital, of all places, and flung myself right back out into the world, sink or swim. 19 Nov 2009 | 6:52 pmSo they invited me to attend the Minority Broadband Summit hosted by ADE down in D.C. this past week, (Shout out to the ADE staff and the great work they did. I keep telling these people that I am not a real journalist) and I got a chance to meet and hang out with some cool people. Props to Roland Martin from CNN. Dude is alright but he has got to let me hook him up with my clothes guy....let me stop. I met and chatted it up with folks like the former mayor of Houston, Lee Brown, and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson from Texas. I also have to give props to all the people who attended and… -
How did it come to this in the first place?
18 Nov 2009 | 5:04 pmSo, like the rest of you,I have been reading this Alexis Hutchinson story. Poor woman. The Army has arrested her for refusing to deploy because she has no one to take care of her baby. Seems she did submit a "care plan" to the Army, but her mother had problems with taking care of the little guy at the last minute. So I have a couple of thoughts: First, where the f&*k is the child's father? Why can't he take care....wait, change that. Why shouldn't he be made to take care of the little guy while mommy goes over sees to defend her country? I have read this story in a few different places… -
Guess Who Came To The Television Studio.
17 Nov 2009 | 7:00 pm"Conservative radio and television talk show host Glenn Beck has made his reputation and fortune in part by taking innocent if not strictly professional relations and turning them into major political scandals. His crusades against Obama administration advisers Patrick Gaspard and Van Jones, who has since resigned, stand out as crowning achievements of the guilt-by-association game. What happens, however, when one looks closely at the people Beck has chosen to invite onto his show, and to whom he has lent his megaphone? The Huffington Post took a look some of the bombastic host's past guests… -

16 Nov 2009 | 5:01 pmA couple of stories have me seeing red tonight. I will start with the two pictures that you are seeing with this post. Tell me, what is wrong with these two pictures? If you noticed the omission of the black folks on the poster set for a UK audience of the movie "Couple's Retreat", please go to the head of the class.Like honestly, WTF is wrong with these movie execs? I mean this shit is getting just a little pathetic. I know that I am supposedly one of your faster racism chasers, but I am here to say that I doubt seriously if folks in the UK are so racist that they would stay away from a… -
Is America afraid of black conservatives? Glen Beck seems to think so.
15 Nov 2009 | 3:00 pm"And for my peeps I truly care Cause without some of them I wouldn't be here And they all know how I feel Cause suckers be like playin themselves to have mass appeal" ~Gang Starr~A lot of my conservative cousins were on Glen Beck's show this past Friday seeking mass appeal. (They called it "Friday The 13th Nightmare for Liberals: Black Conservatives." Honestly, Beck scares me every time I hear or see him. He didn't need a bunch of black conservatives to be frightening.) I am sure they got it, too. But who was the masses that they were appealing to? And why would they even want to appeal to…

Powell to Obama on Afghanistan: Ignore critics, ‘take your time’
11 Nov 2009 | 10:23 amRetired Gen. Colin Powell, in an exclusive interview with me today on The Tom Joyner Morning Show, said he has advised President Barack Obama to take all the time he needs on deciding to send more troops to Afghanistan and to not bend to the will of partisans on the political left and the right. Powell, a 35-year Army veteran, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later secretary of state, said whatever President Obama makes will have “consequences for years to come.” “If you decide to send more troops or that’s what you feel it is necessary, make sure you have a good… -

Sarah Palin's Run-in with "Sexism" on the Cover of Newsweek Magazine or The Sexual Awakening of the Wasilla Wonder, Sarah Palin
19 Nov 2009 | 9:53 pmIf you make your bed you best lie in it. Sarah Palin, leader of the teabag wing of the Republican Party (and nominal leader of "Real America") is plying her new found role as a victim. I thought it was only "liberals" and "minorities" who played the "victim" card? From Palin's fitting interview with Oprah Winfrey (a professional confessor and emotional surrogate to soccer mom's everywhere), to her new book--a project closer to historical fiction than political autobiography--Palin has been rewriting months old history. Bill Belichick's Stunning Decision to Give Peyton Manning the Ball on the 30--or Bill's Worst Night as Coach of the New England Patriots
15 Nov 2009 | 8:52 pmI feel like Dudley at the bicycle store right now. Yes, the refs gave Faulk a horrid spot. But, Belichick should have either 1) not blown the timeouts and thus have been able to challenge the spot or 2) simply punted the ball.I am a New England Patriots mark. I am stunned (now twice, our loss to the Giants being the first) by Belichick's decision to give Peyton Manning the ball on the 30. If I were playing Madden 2009 then surely I go for it, and then I lay down to allow the offense an easy 6 points. This decision then allows me to get the ball back quickly and go up the field. Before a star-studded audience that included a tuxedo-clad Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Keri Hilson, models Selita Ebanks, Chanel Iman and Sessilee Lopez, among others, worked the runway in lingerie outfits that weren't the sorts of things any woman in her right mind could or would wear under her clothes. Dear Old Navy
17 Nov 2009 | 3:22 pmI’m gonna need you to quit playing games with my heart. As a plus size fashionista, I’ve respected your hustle for a while now. For years you’ve produced a steady and reliable line of plus size essentials. Tees, jeans, on-trend blouses. I’ve been there as a purchaser when you respected my demographic and sold plus size garments in your stores. And when you made women’s plus exclusively online I will admit, I felt shunned — but I continued to buy. Because I knew, if I was looking for an affordable, comfortable and chic tee, Old Navy would always be there for…

Dart Adams presents The Evolution Of CGI Films (Non Pixar Edition)
20 Nov 2009 | 10:27 amI decided to do my own personal breakdown of the development and evolution of the CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) film genre. I decided to focus on some films that I feel are landmarks in the progression of these films while excluding most of the CGI mainstream films aimed at younger audiences (Toy Story, Shrek, Monsters Inc., The Polar Express, Madagscar, The Incredibles, Wall-E, Up!, etc.). Without further ado I present the evolution of CGI films through the eyes of Dart Adams: Broken Saints (2001) Broken Saints was easily one of the most overlooked of the groundbreaking animated features… -

Fast forward to 2009 and we have leaders like TweetDeck, Twitterific, Hootsuite, Cotweet, and Seesmic dominating desktops, while their mobile counterparts, Tweetie 2, UberTwitter, and Twidroid dominate mobile devices. Call it a hunch, but I think she enjoys us writing about her messy divorce and the woman she blames for it (although to be fair to Alicia Keys, that’s highly debatable). This time Mashonda’s ranting about her new music. Does anyone care about her music? No shade, but I didn’t think that’s why we paid her any mind. Movie Review: New Moon
20 Nov 2009 | 12:00 amSummary: The pale folks of Forks, Washington are back. This time around, Bella’s teenage romance with Edward (the vegetarian vampire)ends because his life is too dangerous for the melancholy teen. Bella falls into a deep music video-like depression and her heart eventually connects with a werewolf. However, Bella must save the day when Edward’s life is at risk on the other side of the globe — thankfully Virgin Airlines is available in Twilight land! Review: Let’s be clear, New Moon is for a very specific audience. If you are a few years removed from high school, a… -
Sheneneh and Wanda Movie A Go!
19 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmIt all started right here at BET! One of the funniest moments at this year’s BET Awards had to be the Sheneneh and Wanda skit “Skank Robbers” with Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence. Well, the fans spoke and the film is a go. According to Variety.com: Foxx will write the script, which he and Martin will produce through Foxx’s FoxxKing and Lawrence’s Runteldat production banners. The project originated as a parody of a movie trailer for a film called “Skank Robbers,” which Foxx and Lawrence made for the BET Awards. The reaction was strong enough that… -
Twilight Fans Were Upset With Black Vampire
18 Nov 2009 | 10:02 pmYesterday, I attended a screening of the sequel to Twilight, the highly anticipated New Moon, which is in theaters this Friday. Like most vampire movies, Black people are little to none, but there is one loc-headed vampire who was in the first and this new installment. Edi Gathegi is vampire Laurent and in an interview with Black Voices the actor revealed he received some backlash about his color from some Twilight fans: “There was actually some fan backlash when I got cast, because people didn’t see Laurent being black. In the book, he’s described at being olived-toned,… -
Will Mary J. Blige Win An Oscar?
17 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmMary J. Blige is a nine-time Grammy winner (nominated 28 times!) and has countless other awards under her belt from the American Music Awards, Soul Train Awards, BET Awards and the list goes on. Now, it’s quite possible Blige might snatch an Academy Award. Expect Precious to rack up several Academy Award nominations such as lead actress, supporting actress, best director (John Singleton is the first and only African-American to receive an Oscar nod, which was in 1991 for Boyz N The Hood) and hopefully best film. Mary J. Blige might receive a nod for best original song due to the… -
DVD Review: ‘Bruno’
16 Nov 2009 | 9:44 pmBruno comes out on DVD today and for anyone who is a fan of the movie, the DVD does not disappoint. The edgy Sacha Baron Cohen delivers in this mockumentary about an eccentric Austrian celebrity who wants to be world famous. While shocking, disturbing and hilarious, Bruno still provides sharp commentary on prejudice and the narcissism of celebrity. The DVD is stacked with one hour of special features, which includes the previously deleted La Toya Jackson footage. Shortly after the initial screenings of Bruno, MJ passed away — out of respect, the scene was cut from the film. Thankfully,…

The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck Faces Reality With Tiana Doll
20 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amThe fact that we’re in the age of Obama signifies that the U.S. has come far in terms of race perception and relations. Even better is the fact that Disney, in 80 years of their existence, finally saw fit to give us a Black princess named Tiana. They have no idea how much of a boost in self-esteem they’re giving little Black girls but also the wonderful lesson they’re teaching everyone else (if they choose to be open). The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck recently got a dose of this reality thanks to her daughter’s affinity for the Tiana doll. Hasselbeck talked about… -
Tocarra Signs On For Own Reality Show
19 Nov 2009 | 9:00 pmIt looks like the fabulous Tocarra (you have to preface her name without fabuous) is extending her run in reality by signing on for a new show with the Oxygen network. She’s done Top Model, VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club and Celebrity Paranormal Project, and done several shows for BET but now the plus-size model turned uh, actress, TV personality, and NBA girlfriend will be the focus of her own entity. The show is said to chronicle her daily work so I guess we’ll get to see just how fabulous Tocarra really is. Yes, I had to use the word again. With her I just feel you like you have to. -
MTV Nabs Michael Jackson’s Last Performance for Syndication
19 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amMTV has exclusively bought the U.S. TV rights to air Michael Jackson’s This is It, the posthumous documentary about the King of Pop which chronicles the journey to his final performance. The film did well at the boxoffice and will most likely be of high interest to MTV viewers as well as MJ fans who will watch because of their idol. (I still haven’t seen This is It and probably won’t in the theater, but I’d definitely watch it on MTV—not because I watch the network, but because I’m a MJ fan). Sister networks like VH1, BET and Palladia will also be permitted… -
Wendy Renewed Until 2012
18 Nov 2009 | 9:38 pmGet ready to say, “How you doin’?” for at least two more years. Debmar-Mercury has renewed The Wendy Williams Show through the 2011-12 season. In a statement, Frank Cicha, senior VP of programming at FOX wrote: “There was no question that we wanted to renew The Wendy Williams Show given what we’ve seen thus far in both content and ratings. We anticipate even further growth as the show continues to emerge as a key building block, and Wendy as a key personality, of our daytime landscape.” Although ratings have been modest, Debar-Mercury says the show has improved 23… -
Darius McCrary Joins Ranks of The Young and the Restless
18 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amEddie Winslow Darius McCrary will be joining The Young and the Restless to reprise the role of Malcolm Winters. According to Entertainment Weekly, McCrary has signed a multi-year deal to assume the role beginning Nov. 18. His debut will air on Dec. 29. Sorry Shemar Moore fans, there’s a new more chocolatey kid on the block. It would make sense to pick someone who at least looked somewhat like the old character folks got used to, but you know how they do in TV world (hence Judy’s mysterious disappearance from Family Matters), especially with soap operas, but I’m sure…

R.I.P To My Grandfather

Although my family has been preparing for this moment for the past couple of months, it’s still doesn’t lessen the effect of having a loved one leave. Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. Procrastination Is The Lazy Man’s Excuse
3 Nov 2009 | 7:39 amIn college, I was told by my Nigerian boyfriend that, “procrastination is the lazy man’s excuse” is a Nigerian proverb his father would tell him as a child. Considering I’m not Nigerian, I can neither confirm or deny this, but I always thought it made sense. So in honor of my ex from college & his father, I’m officially crowning myself the “Queen of Procrastination”. Social Media & Megalomania: A Dangerous Mix
21 Oct 2009 | 6:35 amI tend to think there are certain types of people who use the internet as their refuge from the ‘real world’. These people may possibly receive more attention from their online ‘persona’, but offline, they have about as much personality as a bag of cotton balls. Dull and lifeless. A while ago, I wrote about “Social Networking Delusions of Grandeur” and megalomania, and now more than ever, I truly think tons of people online suffer from some sort of psychosis. You have these ‘online’ personalities walking around as if every last one of the…

20 Nov 2009 | 6:29 amBringing you the morning news...fastest way to Keep Up!Catholic Bishops and The White House clash on whether abortion should be covered in the new health care bill. Looks like people are clashing in Alaska also. Volunteer "elves" are trying to counter a decision by the U.S. Postal Service to discontinue a program begun in 1954 in the small Alaskan town of North Pole, where they open and respond to thousands of letters addressed to "Santa Claus, North Pole" each year. A program like this should remain open for the sake of the children, helping to maintain their innocence and belief in Santa. -

How Men Learn to Masturbate
18 Nov 2009 | 7:16 amI’ve gotta hand it to Marty Beckerman and Shawn Hollenbach. Last month, at my friend Rachel’s In the Flesh Erotic Reading Series, they told a room stuffed with strangers & friends how they learned to masturbate. Separately. I know them; although they’re equally sexy & hilarious, they’re not together. Marty digs chicks. Shawn likes dick. In any case, I love “How I Learned to Masturbate” stories. I Had Sex Five Times This Year … So Far
17 Nov 2009 | 1:23 pmI don’t get nearly as much action as men often think I do. Apparently, if you write about (shh, whisper it!) S-E-X — or condoms, dating, relationships and stuff related to getting it on — the assumption seems to be: you must screw around a lot! Seriously? Have we, as a culture, become THAT repressed? I’m human. I’m an adult. Sex happens. Does that mean it occurs every day? Nope. Does it happen with every guy I meet? Absolutely not. Not that it’s anyone’s business, but I’m much more exacting than that. Even if I wasn’t, who the hell cares? -

Of course, there are exceptions: when I run, I wear socks inside of my tennis shoes because they protect my feet from excessively rubbing against the leather & rubber; as an accessory, I often fancy up skirts & dresses with patterned hose or fish nets; and, sometimes, I match panties with a pretty bra. I LOVE matching sets. When I wrote… -

It Takes Balls to Try the 9/11 Terrorists in Manhattan
16 Nov 2009 | 7:41 amThe decision to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed and the other 9/11 conspirators in a public, civilian court within sight of Ground Zero is one of the strongest expressions of America's strength that I have heard in many years. There is no honor, no pride, no confidence in trying your enemies in secret. There is honor, pride and chutzpah for America to hold fast to our ideals, trust our democracy, and try our enemies in full public view. The republicans are expressing an amazing amount of hysterical fear at the prospect of giving the terrorists a fair, public trial. I am proud as all hell that we... -

C Street House Looses Tax Exempt Status
17 Nov 2009 | 10:17 pmResidents of the C Street Christian fellowship house will no longer benefit from a loophole that had allowed the house's owners to avoid paying property taxes. Previously, the house -- despite being home to numerous lawmakers -- had been tax exempt, because it was classified as a church. That arrangement had allowed the building's owner, the secretive international Christian organization The Family, to charge significantly below market rents to its residents. In recent year, Senators John Ens -

The Psychological and Genetic Roots of Violence (Part II)
20 Nov 2009 | 6:55 amMarijuana, music and video games are potentially Mind Controlling agents. Mind control is also referred to as brainwashing, coercive persuasion, and thought reform. It refers to a broad range of psychological methods and processes thought to subvert an individual's control of his or her own thoughts, behaviors, emotions, or decision-making. Brainwashing and mind control theories originally developed to explain how the enemy indoctrinated their people using mind control techniques. Drugs and chemicals were also experimented with. The Nazis were heavily involved in such methods. Ecstasy was… -

Here’s the scoop: Rihanna is so inspired by Kate’s style, she’s planning on launching her own fashion line. “I’ve started work on the collection, we are getting it together. 19 Nov 2009 | 11:44 amI really feel like things are about to go south for me real soon.I've been thinking about death way too much these days. Ever since a close friend passed away and family members got sick, I can't seem to shake the specter of death. It consumes most of my free thinking time. I wish I didn't think so much, but I do and I don't know how to shake this one off.My time is mostly spent brokering my free time around what will happen when I die. i know it will happen and I accept that. A Profile Ain't Just A Side View
9 Oct 2009 | 5:00 amOh yeah. Funny incident of the month. Me, my son and a cousin were riding bikes to the store to grab some groceries. On the way back we got profiled. It was kinda slick how the cops did it too. I mean these two ain't the best riding partners since I frequently had to look for them to see where they were. And as usual with the black male of 17 years vintage, they had great difficulty with taking things seriously. Now I am riding at a slow but steady pace. These two fools are every damn where but with me. On the sidewalk, then across the street to the other sidewalk, bumping each other, half a… -

From The Archives: The Iconic Janis Joplin
4 Oct 2009 | 6:58 pmOn October 4th, 1970 Janis Joplin died at 27 years old of an accidental heroin dose. There is no VOICE that has guided my spirit to a fevered climax like the voice of Janis Joplin. Her bluesy, savage, excessive wails are filled with sadness, salvation, redemption and even glimmers of happiness. In a world of over-produced spoiled pop it's challenging for people to appreciate a sound like Janis --

There’s A Place in the Sun
19 Nov 2009 | 11:06 pmMy mother was a big Stevie Wonder fan back in the day. She’d work in the bakery of Rich’s Department store in Atlanta all week long to buy us children shoes and to buy herself a new 45rpm record. Whatever records were stacked on the record player waiting to be played when she got home from baking and decorating cakes all day long had to be rearranged to accommodate whatever Stevie Wonder hit she held in her purse. Wonder’s ‘66 hits “A Place in the Sun” and “Blowing in the Wind” ( both composed by Bob Dylan) were my mother’s favorites. -
Love Your Enemies?
16 Nov 2009 | 10:49 amIt’s the question every liberator has had to ponder. What do you do with traitors? What do you with slaves who get half way to freedom, take one look at the swamp that stands between them and freedom, and decide they want to go back to the plantation? What do you do with the slave who sells out his kin and friends down in the slavequarters by telling the master about all the talk about rebellion and freedom that takes place at night when massa’em is asleep up in the big house? Judas did the honorable thing. He took his own life. While violence isn’t something I subscribe to… -
The Flintstones Meet The Jetsons
12 Nov 2009 | 3:49 pmRaise your hand if your Saturday morning cartoon watching included the stone age antics of the Flintstones and the space age futurism of “The Jetsons.” As a kid Fred, Wilma, and Barney and Betty, Pebbles and Bam Bam held my emotional strings. But it was George, Jane, Elroy, Judie, but most especially, Rosie the mechanical housekeeper and the many space age appliances in the home, that captured my imagination. According to the Jetsons technology was supposed to make our lives easier. Certainly nothing about the Jetsons prepared us for the cost technology would wreak on our… -
Girl, Put Your Records On (Part 2)

Would love to crawl in a safe, dark hole and stay there with my thumb in my mouth. But light is the only thing that’s keeping me alive. Feeling kinda weepy, but don’t have cause to outright cry. Sad and joyful in the same breath. Got some decisions to make. But they will require me to revisit some old places in my mind to find the answers I’m after. Don’t want to go there, but I gotta go to get where I need to be. Don’t wanna have… -

But what about the President’s answer? How do you rate the…

ATLANTA NEWS CREW DRIVES INTO POWER LINES
18 Nov 2009 | 8:41 pmby Amani Channel Any broadcast news professional knows the dangers that go along with field reporting. There are hostile individuals who may take their aggression out on a crew. Hurricane coverage can get dicey, and then there are the live shots. Any photographer or LTO (live truck operator) will tell you never to drive with the mast up. The mast is the “stick” that you see on top of live trucks that allows them to beam a live signal via microwave to the station. It’s probably more technical than that, but I’m no broadcast engineer. Regardless, a local Atlanta news… -

PRESIDENT OBAMA VS. HEALTH CARE
10 Nov 2009 | 6:45 pmWith his overall approval rating down to 48%, President Barack Obama didn’t exactly kick up his heels last week as the nation marked the one year anniversary of his historic election. Mr. Obama won 53% of the vote on November 4, 2008 and his approval rating rocketed up to 65% by Inauguration Day. Nobody expected the President’s numbers to remain in the statistical stratosphere, but how in the world did they nosedive to 48%? How in the world did that happen? Most of the blame lies with the stubbornly sluggish economy, but another cause is Mr. Obama’s inability to define himself as a… -

I asked her not to make a big thing out of it and said I’d be grateful if she could work me into calendar whenever it was convenient – next week, the week after that… Within half an hour my phone rang. The office manager told me that she had spoken to the pastor and that he would be happy to see me tomorrow. -

2 Nov 2009 | 2:24 pmUTC Family, From summer to fall, and having moved from the Midwest to the South and back, I’m here with you again. And reading. I hope you have been, too. I was engrossed in “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill for a few months (which, by the way, is a POWERFUL book), but now I’ve gotten back to my love of African-authored novels. I’ve read a couple in a two-week time period, and ordered about 20 new ones that I can’t wait to share with you guys. PRAYING FOR RIHANNA
27 Oct 2009 | 8:12 amAfter getting beaten bloody by her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, I had hoped that Rihanna would return to the music scene with a message of courage and hope that would help strengthen the young women who admire her. Instead, Rihanna has come back with the most disgusting, demoralizing and potentially dangerous song about female victimization that I have ever heard. “Russian Roulette” is not a metaphorical song. It is literally about a woman pointing a gun at herself – and, judging by the gunshot sound at the end, shooting herself — in order to please her man. Rihanna sings about…

The suspect is a family friend and ex-con who had served only 10 years of an original 30-year sentence for an earlier crime. Jason Mattison Jr., 15, was found raped, gagged and stabbed to death in a closet at his aunt's house last week. Dante Parrish, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder, The Baltimore Sun reports. Parrish was sentenced to 30 years in connection with a 1999 killing but was released after the nonprofit legal group the Innocence Project "found that… -

Lou Dobbs is thinking about stepping his bigoted toe into politics
20 Nov 2009 | 8:00 amI don't know whether to fall out laugh or cry at the prospect of another major election cycle with this blowhard on the campaign trail followed by his Teabaggers, Birthers, and Brown MenaceTM-fearing fans. (Reuters):A week after abruptly quitting his longtime job as a CNN television news host and commentator, Lou Dobbs said on Thursday he is considering career options including possible runs for the White House or U.S. Senate. "Right now I feel exhilaration at the wide range of choices before me as to what I do next," Dobbs, whose outspoken views on immigration and other topics often angered…

Broadband Internet Access in Schools Should’t be a Luxury
20 Nov 2009 | 1:45 pmImagine the outrage from parents, teachers, and the community if a school announced that some of its students would have access to textbooks, research papers, and literature, but other students would be denied those resources. Some students would be branded as worthy, while others as second class. It baffles me that broadband Internet access in our schools is not seen as such as concern. Home
19 Nov 2009 | 11:58 amImage by .bobby via Flickr Home is where the Heart is. A truer statement has never been stated. The house I came home to last night is no longer my mom’s house, that much is true. Everything is changed, not for the worse but just different. The paint colors, the decor, the air, is different. But the heart, her heart, our hearts are still here. -
Lights Out!
18 Nov 2009 | 8:35 pmImage via Wikipedia It is the rainy season in Los Angeles now, not that any rain will actually fall, but technically it is the rainy season. I remember one rainy season mom was in town and at the first sign of lightning and sound of thunder my kids and I started gathering candles. She looked at us quizzically and figured it was just a little thunderstorm what was the big deal. At about that same moment, the electricity went out. Never fails, if there is an actual storm in Glendale we lose power. Thankfully we don’t get many thunderstorms so it isn’t much of an issue but it is good… -

Lakeshore Christmas
16 Nov 2009 | 8:54 pmFull Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book and was asked to review it. Lakeshore Christmas is the next installment of The Lakeshore Chronicles and unfortunately, I have been too sick to read it properly. It stays true to the previous books in the series and allows you to see glimpses of previous characters and storylines, but doesn’t make you feel lost if you have not read the previous books. I need to go back and read it again because I know this doesn’t do it justice. -

I have lived outside of Michigan for more than half of my life now, but every time I go back it feels like going home. I won’t lie, it is a different feeling now, knowing that mom won’t be there but I deal with that as we all must. Get ready for posts talking about a High School Reunion, a niece’s new house, our annual gambling foray up to the Sioux, time in South Bend and a trip to Frankenmuth, and good old family fun. I’m getting excited.

#MusicMonday – HaZiq aLi: Business Is Good
16 Nov 2009 | 5:30 amWho: Haziq Ali (pronunced Ha-zeek) is a motivational hip-hop artist from DC, now in Atlanta. Owner of Organized Rhyme, he’s out to set an example that rappers can make motivational music without sounding peachy (or in the worse case, cheesy). He’s also a motivational speaker who’s serious about helping others help themselves. How Did I Discover Him: I didn’t really discover him, he discovered me. We met via Twitter and never mentioned anything about himself to me. I followed him back, and after consulting with him about his Wordpress blog, he started talking about and mentioning me… -
So… Where’s #MusicMondays… & Other Posts Man???
26 Oct 2009 | 7:33 amSo… I guess some people (like 10 of you) maybe wondering what’s up with the promise of Music Monday posts, especially since I promised to do one every single Monday. Seems like every time I post up something after a hiatus about a hiatus, I feel bad. However, I decided that next Monday, I will post up 4 Music Monday posts to make up for the lack of all the ones I want to post up in October. Yes, I know I’m setting myself up for a lot, but I do have reviews and some new music to showcase. So, just hold up until then. As for other posts, I will try to get to them next month. -

(Read her bio here) How Did I Discover Her: She followed me on Twitter, silently. During one of my cleanup rounds, I commented that I like her picture because she reminds me of an Egyptian Queen. A few days later, I went to her MySpace page, listened to her music snippets and fell in love with her ever since. First Impression: True to the “Neo-Soul Sound”, the back drop of the title single of the EP (Chameleon) took me back… -

He’s not much of a Twitter user (when compare to Questlove and Skillz), and his account is not verified, but his talks about Boondocks Season 3 and seems to keep it official. Because anyone can fake their Identity on Twitter, I can’t really say if this is news or not. But if it’s really is him, sounds like Boondocks Season 3 may come out sooner than later. How Mixman Failed to become a DJ Hero
10 Sep 2009 | 8:13 pmDJ Hero, a game modeled after Guitar Hero, is making tracks as one of the first video games where the DJ is the central character. And while there were other hip-hop themed games, this one focuses on scoring points. However, I can’t help but think that I saw this turntable concept before. So, let me thell you about a game that was actually an earlier and stylish form of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software that came out way before DJ Hero, Guitar Hero… even the music producer games such as MTV Music Generator for the game systems. Allow me to (re)introduce you to: the Mixman.

Maclaren Issues Statement About Recall
16 Nov 2009 | 5:37 amI’m sure many of you heard about the Maclaren recall that was initiated last week due to unsafe hinges that amputated the tips of children’s fingers both in the US and in the UK. Review: How to Be an Everyday Philanthropist
16 Nov 2009 | 4:30 amHow to Be an Everyday Philanthropist: 289 No-Cost Ways to Live a Generous Life by Nicole Boles My rating: 5 of 5 stars It is the annual season of giving and there is no shortage of requests for donations to charitable causes both in our local areas and nationwide. While someone, somewhere is in dire need of help, it seems as though the demand is higher than ever before. People, families, and children less fortunate than us desperately need a helping hand. Nearly Two-Thirds of Children Have Been Bullied in Past Month, Resources Included to Help Your Child
11 Nov 2009 | 5:30 amWhen I was in school I used to be bullied and picked on. I don’t think any of us haven’t been there. I used to hate it! It certainly didn’t make school any easier. Thankfully I was a bookworm who cared only about my studies, but still to this day I think about how being picked on really hurt my self-esteem. At least all of that is past me, but children still have to be subjected to bullying day in and day out. Some think bullying is a right of passage for children and that it’s a fact of life. I think that’s wrong! That’s one of the reasons my husband and I…

Yay or Nay: German Lingerie Commercial
26 Oct 2009 | 2:01 pmI'm not sure what to think about it. At first glance, I knew it wasn't an American commercial - and not only due to the model's bare-bottom in the opening shot. There is an elegance in this ad that you just don't find on our airwaves. I wouldn't go as far as saying that it is "empowering" to women - but I am not offended by it either. Then again, I am not Muslim (did you know that there was a ban on women selling lingerie in Saudi Arabia?) Let me know what you think of this ad - especially the twist at the end. -

I wish I had been able to listen to Chrisette's entire performance, but my focus was on getting to my seat (a nice long journey, but when you make a last minute decision to go to a concert out of town what more can you expect). 8 Oct 2009 | 8:35 pmWhy must we, human beings, blow things up? Cause destruction? In the name of science? Apparently destroying Earth is no longer enough; now scientists are "bombing" the Moon! "Why?" you ask.Well, our planet is in dire need of water, so....oh? What? We aren't in need of water? Well, NASA will crash a spacecraft into the moon tomorrow morning (10/9). According to this article (click here to read), they are interested in water ice that may be in the moon craters. This has to be one of the stupidest waste of resources! Not to mention causing an explosion on the moon just seems wrong, dangerous…

Feelings about “Precious” / PUSH
Feelings about “Precious” / PUSH After seeing the film “Precious” based on the novel Push I had mixed feelings. I read the novel Push when I was 14 years old and in the 9th grade and I couldn’t understand what I was reading but I was fascinated. The issues brought up in the book were ones I had never heard of, couldn’t relate to, and were so different than what I was used to reading, but I was still intrigued. As I have gotten older and grown over the years I realized more and more what I was reading and how very real these issues are, but they are unspoken about even today such… -

Quick Quotes From Toni Braxton + Her New Video With Trey Songz
20 Nov 2009 | 12:00 pmThe video for Toni Braxton’s “Yesterday” could easily be passed off as an extended commercial for Especially Yours but you can’t win them all. Not too many people can pull off Frankie’s BET Hip Hop Awards wig, trust me I have tried. Check out what she had to say about her failed marriage after the jump. “I’m newly separated – no-one really knows what went wrong,” Braxton said. “My husband and I are still cool – we get along great. But that could become challenging. If things go further, you may read about some things… things will have to be split… -

He is not afraid to inject well-placed humor in his sermons. He posed on his Old Time Camp Meeting Songs - Vol. III in a pair of overalls. His latest music offering, Something New, suggests that once again, Rev. The Clark Sisters Family Christmas (Karew Records/EMI Gospel)
18 Nov 2009 | 12:41 pmThe Clark Sisters Family ChristmasKarew Records/EMI Gospel 2009www.emigospel.comAlthough The Clark Sisters Family Christmas CD rightfully showcases the four fine ladies on the cover, the Moss Brothers steal the show.Don't get me wrong: the Clark Sisters' tight harmonies -- a mix of Pointer Sisters flair and Andrews Sisters charm -- are ready-made for a Christmas album. Indeed, their rendition of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is exquisite with only piano accompaniment. Their cover of "Drummer Boy" is the funkiest I've ever heard, magically transforming the children's novelty into a praise and… -

16 Nov 2009 | 4:25 pm“Name Sake” (Live Version)Denise ClarkFrom the CD Denise Clark "Live" Overwhelmedwww.deniseclarksings.comTo the general public, the paradigm of gospel music is a fully-robed choir in joyous rapture, singing full-voiced at quick tempo, handclapping and swaying for the Kingdom. More often, however, gospel music in its various forms is performed by an individual or group at a slow tempo. The music is intense, dramatic, electric, a bundle of tension and release, and soaked to the skin with personal emotion and heartrending testimony.Intense and dramatic certainly describe Denise Clark’s… -

It encourages those who find themselves befallen on hard times to never forget to worship; refocusing from the negative to the positive is the key to one's breakthrough.“In the midst of every test, every trial, I made up my mind that I will bless the Lord at all times,” Morgan shouts, and the background vocalists assent. Would somebody please tell me, America, just who is it we have become? “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the country for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” I’m not delusional ya’ll; like too many of you, I’ve lived the empty irony of “with liberty and justice for all.” but when exactly did the Pledge of Allegiance become the Hypocrites’ Oath? And no I’m not trippin. I know in this context, God is little more than a tool of justification and division,…

11 Nov 2009 | 6:30 amThis topic comes courtesy of Justin, one of my favourite people to bump into when I’m running the streets. If you live in Toronto and you don’t know about tdot.tv, head over there (after you read this post) and check it out. Thank me later. I was watching this video this morning. I thought it was interesting, it certainly made my head spin a bit, but I had another post for today in mind so I filed it under pending blog posts and went about my business. But my mind just kept running back to it so I figured the universe was trying to tell me to write about it today. For whatever reason I… -
You'll come around
9 Nov 2009 | 7:08 amIf you’re single and in your mid-thirties, you’re extremely lucky you’ve probably figured out a few things about yourself. You know what you believe, who you are, what you want out of a relationship, and what you like and don’t like. And while we all recognize that self-exploration never really ends, once you get to a point where you really know yourself, it’s a little easier to make the tough decisions in life. At least it should be. If you know me in real life you know that some of my “fundamental truths” about life are a little…weird. I don’t believe in… -

It’s one of my favourite relationship issues because it is so ripe with material. Who cheats more, how we cheat, why we cheat, what is cheating, it’s a never-ending discussion. But for today we will focus on… -

And if I can't have it, then I'm fakin' it
2 Nov 2009 | 6:00 amAh the big O. I've talked about this before but a discussion that came up at Inside Our Heads the other night prompted me to re-examine it. We were discussing the importance of orgasms and whether the ladies on the panel ever faked it. And after a quick internal debate about whether I should tell the truth, I admitted that yes, I'm a faker. See here's the thing: I'm a cerebral person. My brain never shuts off, so the concept of just being in the moment doesn't really compute for me. During secksy time I will invariably be distracted...sometimes it's by something as small as the ticking…

The Pump Heard Round The World: Reebok Pump 20th Anniversary Collabos
20 Nov 2009 | 1:42 pmColette Pump 20 Window Display via Sneaker Obsession It's been almost 20 years since Reebok's "new idea", and with their new anniversary collaborations, "The Pump" shoe has once again gotten some air under it. Originally released as a basketball sneaker, Reebok's Pump was created to give the maximum support to a ballers ankles. This was done by allowing the owner to press a inflation device built into the tongue, causing air pockets in the shoe to expand around the foot. Over the years, the appeal of the shoe became less about it's technology, and more about their distinctive look, which… -

19 Nov 2009 | 9:12 pmLyle & Scott Black Merino Wool Roll Neck $148.50 by Lyle & Scott at My-Wardrobe.com Scotland's Lyle & Scott has seen a revival of sorts, moving from a stodgy knitwear brand worn by golfers, to a hip youth oriented brand worn by rockers....their black turtleneck is one of my favorite pieces because it can take you just about anywhere, and make you look damn good when you get there... -
Wax Poetics Issue No.38
19 Nov 2009 | 8:52 pmWax Poetics Issue No.38 explores the black cinema, with a not totally unexpected bent towards the blaxploitation genre...Curtis Mayfield is the prime subject of two different covers, augmented with a discussion of his epic soundtrack for "Superfly". Since they created both the score and soundtrack for the recently released film Black Dynamite, there is obviously some dialogue about that as well. The issue is rounded out with pieces on Spike Lee, and writer/hustler Robert Beck AKA Iceberg Slim..I can dig it...Available Now.

On the MyBrownBaby Table: Candied Yam Sticky Buns
19 Nov 2009 | 9:32 pmBy SHELLEY CHAPMANIn addition to November being my birthday month, I have many reasons to love this time of year—particularly because of all the goodies I get to create and consume. Between Halloween treats, birthday dinners, Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas gatherings and New Year's Eve galas, I often find myself in culinary heaven. In past years, my offerings have been confined to my friends and -

18 Nov 2009 | 9:10 pmIt's no secret I stan hard for Lamar and Ronnie Tyler, the dynamic duo behind the fab, award-winning site BlackandMarriedWithKids.com; they're eloquent, smart, and an incredible example of the beauty that is black love. Indeed, the couple is so passionate about the need for African American men and women to figure out the love thing that they made a movie about it—a ground-breaking documentary -
Wordless Wednesday: How Not To Talk About Africa
17 Nov 2009 | 9:01 pmI just adore this video, a satire piece by Binyavanga Wainaina of Kenya—and not just because it stars the absolutely delicious Djimon Hounsou. Wainaina uses this thought-provoking, at times comical commentary to point out the more ignorant attitudes that find their way into Western literature and other written stories about Africa. Personally, I think we could sub in pretty much any group—black -
Styling a Black Girl's Hair Is No Job For Daddies!
16 Nov 2009 | 9:01 pmBy MOCHA DADMy daughter, Nee, has absolutely no confidence in my ability to do her hair. Whenever I attempt to style it, she becomes more obnoxious than Rush Limbaugh.Recently, my wife, KayEm, had to run an errand and I thought I would surprise her by combing and styling Nee’s hair (even though, Nee prefers KayEm to do her hair, it’s not a pleasant experience for either party. If you’ve ever -
Black Moms ARE Different—and That's OK.
15 Nov 2009 | 9:01 pmSo, after yet another white mom stomped onto MyBrownBaby accusing me of "segregating" myself for writing about issues affecting black moms, my homegirl Akilah over at the fabulous Execumama told me that I should "never freakin' explain again" why I do what I do. She's right, you know; if people bothered to look around and read the actual content on MyBrownBaby, they wouldn't get hung up on the
