  • Is Health Care Reform Going to Cost you More or Less Money?

    Boyce Watkins, PhD
    6 Nov 2009 | 11:05 am
Filed under: News, The Economy All of us are confused about health care reform. Many of us support the idea because we support the president. Some of us support health care reform because we know that the current system is terribly flawed. Well, getting informed on the issues might be a great way to ensure that you know what you are backing. One of the great problems with health care reform is that most Americans can't trust it in the first place, given that there are so many special interest groups who've hooked their fangs into a corrupt and dysfunctional system. Pharmaceutical companies…

That's why the tea-baggers have been making so much noise this week at the Capitol, where the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a health care reform bill as early as Saturday, Nov. 7. They want to kill the legislation and end any chance of universal health care.So how…

When members of a volunteer army start shooting bases up, that is not a good. Sporadic reports of the aftermath flowed in until the mother lode came through: the suspected gunman’s name. 5 Nov 2009 | 4:12 pm
Here's a review about the new film, Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, which seems to think so. It's titled "The Black Matriarch as Villain," by Juell Stewart, in Color LinesThere has already been considerable Oscar buzz surrounding both Mo’Nique and Sidibe, and the film has received numerous accolades, including the Grand Jury Prize for the Dramatic category at Sundance and the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The actors and director Lee Daniels deserve the praise they’ve received for making such a powerful movie.  But beneath the film was…

    2 Oct 2009 | 10:52 pm
First, there was the Tyra Banks' "real hair" spectacle.  Now, Chris Rock has a new movie coming out on "Good Hair."  Here's a clip from Oprah's show from earlier this week:Here's the official trailer for Good Hair (I'm curious to go see this, actually, because the motivation behind Chris Rock's interest in doing this film stemmed from his concern as a father that his little daughters, whom he reassures that they are beautiful, are already understanding the difference between their own hair and "good hair"):

    30 Sep 2009 | 7:08 pm
Check out this commentary from the Root:I winced when I saw the wooden railroad plank being smacked against Derrion Albert’s head. My stomach turned when I saw the five other young black men stomp on Albert. By the end, my eyes welled up with tears when I realized what I saw: A 16-year-old child beat to death. No doubt it was difficult for me to get through the entire 2:27 of footage, even with parts blurred out, and I’m sure it will be difficult for others to watch as well, but the fact remains: We need to watch. We need to watch and not turn away because as history has taught us,…

Think you have nothing in common with Rihanna? Think again. Today, in her first public interview since the altercation with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna talks about her relationship with him and her perspective now. Correcting Dianne Sawyer she said, “it’s actually eight or nine times” women go back to the man after they’ve been physically abused. She also talked about how difficult and “embarrassing” it was to be in the situation amidst the public scrutiny. After seeing the interview, for the first time since the incident in February, I felt a sense of connection with her.

So the much talked about film “Precious” finally opens in select cities today (then rolls out across the country over the next couple of weeks). I’m sure a lot of folks are probably saying finally because this flick has been hyped since January when it premiered at Sundance and blew those in attendance away. That is  certainly a long lead time but I’m here to say that the film definitely lives up to all the hype. ... And getting ready to move TBS HQ to Washington, D.C. this week. Last night Mama Snob helped as I packed up the bulk of the wardrobe. Today it's time to get the car serviced and tackle which books from my library are making the trip and which ones are getting donated to charity. Because The Snob is moving to D.C. this week, the site will be on a lighter posting schedule as I get myself packed, moved and familiar with our Nation's Capital! Thanks for your patience!

I have been wanting to post about this story for awhile now. I am talking about the one from Cleveland where Anthony Sowell is doing his part to give black folks equal billing even when it comes to serial killers. But sorry Anthony, you are not exactly a trail blazer, we have had others like you before. What you are is a monster, one who should have been locked away from the rest of society a long time ago. No need to go over this story again; we all know the dreadful and unspeakable details by now: Eleven women murdered; rotting and decaying bodies found in a portion of his home; a rape and…

Let me start off tonight's post by saying congrats to the Zoo Yawk Hankees. Looks like the venerable franchise is going to win their 27th (or is it 28th) World Series at the expense of the "Fightens". That's an impressive run. I will ignore the fact that half of those championships came when there were like what, eight teams in baseball, not to mention a certain guy with a candy bar named after him wearing the pinstripes. Still, I won't say anything negative about the Yankees tonight, they deserve their rings. Hopefully A-Rod's will be able to fit his ring finger. I am pretty sure that " the…

The folks in Jersey might just be stuck with Chris Christie, the republican, for the next four years. (That's if he doesn't eat half of the state by then.) But fear not Obamaholics, don't listen to the pundits, this is not a referendum on your boy. A-merry-cans still like him personally. They are just a little skittish about his policies right now. It is the only one that edifies the individual and not the entire body. We have taken a gift that is so small and blown it up. In fact, some denominations have been formed solely around speaking in tongues. This event happened on the same day that the Holy Spirit came into the lives of the believers. The central claim in Part 1 was that mainstream rap critics fail to take seriously the gripes that disenchanted golden era fans have with the current rap landscape. Instead, these fans are reduced to bitter old grouch stereotypes, while their legitimate concerns about the overall quality of today’s rap, especially in comparison to 80s and 90s rap, are dismissed or ignored.I’m working from the premise that today’s rap landscape is better in some ways (inclusiveness, access), but worse in more ways (everything else). And in my view, the ways in which the landscape is better don’t lead…

"Hopefully my record company will let me put this out around March or April," the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based pastor said. Sapp's desired retail plan may be a little presumptuous, as his 'Thirsty' CD remains a Top 15 bestseller on the gospel charts two years after its release thanks to his runaway smash, 'Never Would Have Made It.' Politics aside (i.e. whether or not you think Obama was a good pick), if you’re interested in learning more about the Nobel prizes and “Le marchand de la mort,” see Wikipedia, Biography, Time or pick up a…

Some time back I wrote in depth about the implementation of something called Homeland Security Presidential Directive #12 (HSPD#12)which threatened my wife's rights as well as the rights of every Federal employee and contractor (my initial coverage was picked up by the Huffington Post). The directive per se isn't bad, merely requiring a uniform system of issuing IDs to all Federal employees and contractors across all agencies. But, under the Bush Administration, no good idea went unexploited for opportunities to deny people their basic civil liberties. The implementation of HSPD#12 became…

First of all, congratulation to John Liu for becoming the first Chinese-American to be elected to city-wide office in New York City. That's a huge slap on the face for the New York Democratic Party establishment; an establishment that's never been too keen on grassroots movements unless they can co-opt to solidify their status-quo. The other big grassroots story of the night was Bill de Blasio. He walloped Mark Green, one of the darlings of the New York political elite, in a run-off election and breezed into the Political Advocate's office with 76.9% of the vote. For a political... ...

O’FALLON, Mo. — With three small children and her marriage in trouble, Pat Bond attended a spirituality retreat for Roman Catholic women in Illinois 26 years ago in hopes of finding support and comfort. What Ms. Bond found was a priest — a dynamic, handsome Franciscan friar in a brown robe — who was serving as the spiritual director for the retreat and agreed to begin counseling her on her marriage. My research specifically is focusing on CNN’s iReport platform and how content is shared, vetted, selected, and then distributed. Several scholars have taken steps to examine this subject with mixed results. The research generally shows a lack of consistency across news organizations regarding participatory practices. After getting beaten bloody by her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, I had hoped that Rihanna would return to the music scene with a message of courage and hope that would help strengthen the young women who admire her. Instead, Rihanna has come back with the most disgusting, demoralizing and potentially dangerous song about female victimization that I have ever heard. “Russian Roulette” is not a metaphorical song. It is literally about a woman pointing a gun at herself – and, judging by the gunshot sound at the end, shooting herself — in order to please her man. Rihanna sings about…

1997. Senior year in college. I can’t believe it’s been 11 years. 12 YEARS!! Senior year was simultaneously great, and horrible. I went to Mardi Gras, New Zealand, and Australia. My car got broken into. I had a gang of money. 1st semester, I averaged about four hours of sleep a night because I was taking two of the hardest classes of my life. But, the highlight was definitely me and my boy Smooth’s 21st birthday party. It was beyond ridiculous. It was crunk inside AND outside. The liquor was flowing and so were the chicks. I have pictures, but NOBODY can ever see them. Jay-Z –…

  • So… Where’s #MusicMondays… & Other Posts Man???

    Nukirk
    26 Oct 2009 | 7:33 am
So… I guess some people (like 10 of you) maybe wondering what’s up with the promise of Music Monday posts, especially since I promised to do one every single Monday. Seems like every time I post up something after a hiatus about a hiatus, I feel bad. However, I decided that next Monday, I will post up 4 Music Monday posts to make up for the lack of all the ones I want to post up in October. Yes, I know I’m setting myself up for a lot, but I do have reviews and some new music to showcase. So, just hold up until then. As for other posts, I will try to get to them next month.
  • #MusicMonday – Dezaray Dawn

    Nukirk
    28 Sep 2009 | 9:00 am
Who: Dezaray Dawn. She’s an indie songwriter and singer. Neo-soul artist Anthony David is a cousin, as are Sean Stockman of Boys II Men fame, and Tiny from Xscape. (Read her bio here) How Did I Discover Her: She followed me on Twitter, silently. During one of my cleanup rounds, I commented that I like her picture because she reminds me of an Egyptian Queen. A few days later, I went to her MySpace page, listened to her music snippets and fell in love with her ever since. First Impression: True to the “Neo-Soul Sound”, the back drop of the title single of the EP (Chameleon) took me back…

    27 Sep 2009 | 5:37 pm
Is Aaron McGruder on Twitter? This unusually quiet commentator on Black Culture and American Politics (oh and creator of the Boondocks, if you didn’t know) seems to have signed up for a Twitter account. He’s not much of a Twitter user (when compare to Questlove and Skillz), and his account is not verified, but his talks about Boondocks Season 3 and seems to keep it official. Because anyone can fake their Identity on Twitter, I can’t really say if this is news or not. But if it’s really is him, sounds like Boondocks Season 3 may come out sooner than later. Love My Thoughts? Please…
  • How Mixman Failed to become a DJ Hero

    Nukirk
    10 Sep 2009 | 8:13 pm
DJ Hero, a game modeled after Guitar Hero, is making tracks as one of the first video games where the DJ is the central character. And while there were other hip-hop themed games, this one focuses on scoring points. However, I can’t help but think that I saw this turntable concept before. So, let me thell you about a game that was actually an earlier and stylish form of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software that came out way before DJ Hero, Guitar Hero… even the music producer games such as MTV Music Generator for the game systems. Allow me to (re)introduce you to: the Mixman.

Hey, what’s going on? First off, I apologized for the long, unannounced hiatus. Between personal problems, MJ’s death, and the randomness that is life, I have yet to sit down and put together a thought that will spark. However, the other problem is the quality of my blog posts have not been up to par as of late. Along with the Twitter updates, it seems that I was making myself more random than I really want to broadcast. So, taking a break was pretty much needed. However, now I’m working up for “Season 2” of Thought Remixer. Here are some thoughts you can look forward to: Did you…

While November 1st marked the very first day of the holiday season, there are two issues that are also being honed in upon this month: diabetes and premature birth. November is American Diabetes Month. I’m sure you probably have someone close to you who is suffering from diabetes. It is such a horrible disease, but one that is completely preventable with diet, exercise, and healthy living. This year the American Diabetes Association is launching a campaign called Stop Diabetes because diabetes is now an epidemic in this country. There are 24 million children and adults who are living…

Of course, he came home with the WRONG package, but I’m so happy he did! He came home with the…

We have a Wii. We love it, all except for one thing. It doesn’t play DVDs. I hate that. It should be able to play movies. But that’s for me to wallow over. As great as the Wii is, Sony at least understands that gamers and families want to use their console for more than one purpose, especially considering the high cost of their machines and the games. All gaming consoles should be multi-functional. Sony and Microsoft get it. Netflix announced today (source) that PS3 owners will soon be able to stream movies and TV shows instantly to their console for $8.99 a month plus get…

In the aftermath of Allison Samuels' controversial article, Zahara Jolie Pitt and the Politics of Uncombed Hair, Newsweek asked three bloggers, including yours truly, to write a response to the article and Samuels' rebuttal to the criticism.  I gave my response the title Are We All Really "Team Zahara?" but I am fine with how Newsweek printed it:  Nichelle Gainer: It's Time To Fully Embrace Natural Hair.  I am also happy to see that Newsweek didn't shy away from asking Roslyn Hardy Holcomb for her response, Hair Don'ts Hold Us Back, after her scathing…

I'm not sure what to think about it.  At first glance, I knew it wasn't an American commercial - and not only due to the model's bare-bottom in the opening shot.  There is an elegance in this ad that you just don't find on our airwaves.  I wouldn't go as far as saying that it is "empowering" to women - but I am not offended by it either.  Then again, I am not Muslim (did you know that there was a ban on women selling lingerie in Saudi Arabia?) Let me know what you think of this ad - especially the twist at the end.

An evening with Maxwell, Common, and Chrisette Michele? What an AMAZING concert! Each performer brought their A-game and made the price of admission totally worth it. I wish I had been able to listen to Chrisette's entire performance, but my focus was on getting to my seat (a nice long journey, but when you make a last minute decision to go to a concert out of town what more can you expect). I listened to her sing Epiphany while I bought a concert t-shirt and from what I could hear, mind you, I'm surrounded by hordes of people within the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, she sang beautifully!

    4 Nov 2009 | 11:24 pm
It seems like forever ago when we were first eligible to check the 25-35 age box. After we threw our “flirty thirty” birthday party in New York, I remember us thinking we didn’t feel any different now that we were “older.” But ever since turning the big 3-3 we came to the realization that several elements about life change once you hit your flirty thirties:   1. A Night In with the Girls Beats a Sweaty Club Any Day – In the twenties it was all about the sweat box club. But in the flirty thirties, there’s something about chatting it up with your girls over a good bottle of wine,…

By Kailei Richardson November 4, 2008: the night that most of us will never forget. I bet we all can remember where we were when the votes came in and Barack Obama became the first Black president of the United States. For me, I had just awoken shortly after touchdown in Dallas. “We did it! Your vote counted, girl!” was the first voicemail I received (from my mom) after I landed. I was still registered to vote in Illinois and since my absentee ballot I requested never arrived, I decided 48 hours before the election that I had to fly to Illinois to vote. There was absolutely no way…

Few organizations can boast that they have the clout and reputation to bring together the most influential people of color in the communications industry. Even fewer can do so in a blizzard in Denver, CO. But that’s exactly what the National Association of Multiethnicity in Communications and the Walter Kaitz Foundation were able to do earlier this week, Oct 26-28, at their annual conference and dinner. NAMIC, established in 1980 and led by Kathy Johnson, is the premiere organization that “educates, advocates and empowers for multi-ethnic diversity in the telecommunications industry.”…

Alright, hold the…up ya’ll. Caucasian Americans tripping because I’ve got the unmitigated gall to talk about doing anything while being overtly African American and African Americans tripping because I would choose a book written by Caucasian Americans for an experiment in applied functional unity. Huh? And then you want to tag me “enemy” and call me threat or brainwashed? Okay, so I’ll admit it – I confuse easy, but all that rhetoric sound ludicrous to me. What is it about any proud, productive, overtly African American undertaking that terrifies and offends some fear centered,…

He apologized to the woman and to himself after admitting to buggery at the Horry County courthouse. "I'm sorry about what I've done. I didn't mean to do it. It's my fault. Clevelander’s gathered Wednesday night at the House of God Church to pray for the victims of accused serial killer Anthony Sowell, whose house of horrors is just one block from the church. Ironically, members of the congregation had tried to help distressed women in the neighborhood like 31-year-old Telacia Fortson, whose family fears she may be one of Sowell’s victims. Rev. Catherine Bryant says “we would be very saddened to know that this young lady, this beautiful young lady who has touched us very dearly because we have known her in a very personal way.” Wednesday morning, Anthony…

Is this another Bad Boy flop? I hope not, for Dawn's sake. She's always talking about how broke she is...I will consider the variables. I personally don't think that Diddy is a noteworthy rapper. He had a couple of tracks back in the day that had me going. But present-tense, not so much. However, we all know that Dawn can sing. Sidenote, I now wonder if she was really screwing Danity Kane over the whole time. Nonetheless, Kaleena can sing as well; and she has done some writing. I've heard some of their stuff on YouTube and it sounds good. But some of the tracks have Diddy in autotone, and we…

(We also have to give a little shout-out to Boboleechron who suggested I write about “rainy days and stewed pigtail”, even though I couldn’t find a way to make that fit for the blog). Ah, cheating. It’s one of my favourite relationship issues because it is so ripe with material. Who cheats more, how we cheat, why we cheat, what is cheating, it’s a never-ending discussion. 2 Nov 2009 | 6:00 am
Ah the big O. I've talked about this before but a discussion that came up at Inside Our Heads the other night prompted me to re-examine it.  We were discussing the importance of orgasms and whether the ladies on the panel ever faked it. And after a quick internal debate about whether I should tell the truth, I admitted that yes, I'm a faker. See here's the thing: I'm a cerebral person. My brain never shuts off, so the concept of just being in the moment doesn't really compute for me. During secksy time I will invariably be distracted...sometimes it's by something as small as the ticking…
  • Oh You Have Kids??

    30 Oct 2009 | 6:24 am
I was reading this on my very favourite blog the other day and got to thinking about men and kids. If you're a single woman in your 30's you're probably going to encounter this a time or two on your quest for Mr. Right. I know I have, anyway. I know a few women who absolutely will not date a man with kids. And I know a lot more who are slightly turned off by it, but will still date him. Personally I don't have a problem with it, but I will admit that there have been a few times when I've had issues with the way a man I've been involved with has handled the um, situation. Let's review: My…

I’m sorry for speaking ill of the dead to me, but really those who know me know that this guy was just…no good. When I go back now and read my diaries from that time I’m shocked by how heinously this guy treated me and the worst part about it is that I can’t even ask myself why I let it happen because I already know the reason. I let all that shit happen because I understood this dude.  I knew how he was raised, how the world had treated him, what he had been through, and how all…
